In recent years Christianity has suffered a blow at the hands of the United States Supreme Court.  Schools have been barred from saying prayers at sporting events, activists are lobbying to take “one nation under God” out of the pledge of allegiance, a judge in Alabama had to remove the Ten Commandments from the front of the courthouse, and God forbid you should say grace before meals at a public gathering.  Saying the Lord’s Prayer at invocations is now forbidden and Christmas, the celebration of Christ’s birth is no longer Christmas, it is now “the holidays.”  Christians, there is something you can do to counteract this very public attack on our faith.  Wear your cross necklace visibly with dignity and pride.

Christian jewelry does not have to be ostentatious to be meaningful.  You can wear a simple, yet elegant cross necklace with almost any attire.  If you are at a formal or semi formal gathering, a gold cross necklace, a white gold cross necklace or even a diamond cross necklace would adorn your neck with beauty and grace while making a statement of faith.  It is not necessary to be flamboyant to get your point across.  Simplicity often speaks louder than words.

I, personally, would like to start a movement where every Christian wore a large wooden cross necklace with their every day clothing.  Of course I know I am being unrealistic but I envision our lawmakers taking notice of millions upon millions of Americans “protesting” silently with a highly visible symbol that speaks for itself.  Perhaps the larger the cross necklace the louder our silence would speak.  Anyways, it’s a thought.

A silver cross necklace is lovely with casual wear and can also be worn with evening apparel.  It is not necessary to spend a small fortune on a cross necklace or a cross pendant.  If you have been wanting to wear a cross and yet don’t have the financial resources to buy gold, sterling silver is less expensive and can be quite exquisite.  You don’t have to wear a gold cross necklace to be identified as a Christian, but if you have your heart set on gold look for sales and discounts.  There are many online discount and wholesale jewelry sites where you can realize a huge savings in fine gold jewelry.  Shop around a bit an you are sure to find a gold cross pendant or necklace within your means.

Whether you are looking for something flashy or something understated and elegant, you can easily find a cross necklace to wear as a sign of your faith.  I believe that Christians need to take up a common front and display their faith proudly and boldly.  Yes, you can always write to your congressmen and senators but it needs to start somewhere.  They can hardly fail to notice ever growing numbers of people visibly wearing a cross necklace.  Christian jewelry is your statement on a private level.  It’s up to them to take our constitutional rights before the assembly.

A Cross Necklace for Christmas

It goes without saying that anyone wearing a cross necklace is usually a Christian.  So that being said, you would not be looking for a cross necklace for the holidays because to Christians it is Christmas. (I know we are talking semantics here, but bear with me.  I had to get my plug in somewhere!)  If you are looking for the perfect gift to give a believer for Christmas, or any special day for that matter, a beautiful cross necklace would be ideal.

Depending on your budget you can find an exquisite white gold cross necklace or a simple wooden cross necklace.  Many of the ones crafted from wood are made in the Holy Land and have even more significance.  The idea is to find one that will be cherished by the person wearing it.   If a cross has no religious meaning for you, then the recipient will appreciate it that much more because you respect his or her faith.  When I was little, my mother gave me a cross pendant for Christmas one year.  I remember it to this day because it had what looked like a tiny crystal, or to a child’s eye a diamond, in the center.  When you held it up to the light and peeked into it you could see the Lord’s Prayer.  I was so amazed with that and would look at it throughout the day wondering how it got in there.  Not only was the gift cherished because my mother gave it to me, but it was also unique for that time.

Any Christian jewelry store should carry a fine assortment of crosses.  You would certainly at least be able to find a sterling silver cross necklace at the very least.  Now if you are looking for a gold cross necklace or a diamond cross necklace you might have to find a fine jewelers in a local mall or online.  But please be cautious when buying online.  If you are looking to spend a small fortune on a fine piece of jewelry make sure you do some checking for the authenticity of the website you are buying from.  You could check with the BBB online to see if there have been any complaints registered.  If buying from an online auction site such as ebay or amazon ALWAYS read the feedbacks.

Whether you are looking for a Christmas gift, a birthday gift an anniversary gift etc, a cross necklace is always a valued present.  It can be expensive or inexpensive, large or small, part of a cross necklace set or a simple cross pendant on its own.  Just know that a cross is always cherished by a believer and you can’t go wrong in choosing one as a gift.

Cross Necklaces or Cross Pendants?

Cross necklaces are most commonly worn as a statement of faith.  Most people who wear a cross wear it willingly and visibly as a sign they believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ.  To them a cross is symbolic of His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sin.  Although crosses are fashionable, most nonbelievers would not wear them simply because Christianity is implicit in its intention.

A cross necklace can be simple with no figure of the crucified Christ on them.  When Jesus is on the cross it is referred to as a crucifix.  Catholics and Orthodox Christians typically wear crucifixes.  The figure of Christ can be three dimensional or a flat icon as worn by the Orthodox Rites.  Many Protestants believe that placing the figure on a cross implies idolatry and refuse to wear any graven image.  This has created much controversy over the years because Catholics contend that it is simply a visible sign while Protestants argue it is a false idol and that Jesus is no longer on the cross; He is risen.

Cross and crucifix necklaces can be simple, inexpensive costume jewelry.  They can also be exquisite pieces purchased from a high end jewelry store.   While most chains they are worn on are sterling silver or gold, some have an alloy core and are plated with sterling or gold.  Many diamond cross necklaces are sold exclusively in jewelry stores.  They are expensive and often hand crafted.  Use of other precious and semi precious stones may also be artistically employed.

Sometimes cross necklaces are referred to as cross pendants.  On the surface there appears to be little difference between a pendant and a cross necklace; that is unless you are a believer.  A necklace is a piece of jewelry you wear around your neck while a pendant has special meaning or significance to the person wearing it.  Consequently, many Christians refer to them as cross pendants.

While not common, there is another type of cross necklace that wanes and waxes in popularity as fashions evolve.  Wooden cross necklaces resurface from time to time and can either be fashionable or have deeper significance to Christians.  Jesus died on a cross and the cross was made from wood so there is an implicit symbolism in wearing a wooden cross.

All in all, cross necklaces are not to be worn by everyone.  However, whether embellished or simple, they are usually worn with pride and dignity.
